Reading and Language Arts:
Reading and Language Art skills will happen in the morning and afternoon. We do comprehension, phonics, spelling, daily language review, journal writing, and much more.
**Decodable Books will come home once a day for approximately 2 weeks starting August 25th. Please have your child read the book until they can read it fluently and smoothly with expression; then return it for a new book. Our goal is to send home one book each night for the 2 weeks, but if your child needs more time with the book please keep it longer.
**Take-home Books will start coming home after the Decodable Books are finished. They are picture books or chapter books that your student chooses, at their independent reading level. They will be in a Ziploc bag for protection. When your child is not reading the book, please have them keep the book in the Ziploc bag. If the book is lost or damaged, it is your responsibility to pay for it. When your child can read it fluently and smoothly with expression, they should return it and check out another book. These books will be used for the rest of the school year for all Second Grade students so please take care of them.
Writing: The Utah State Core is requesting additional writing from students of all ages. Students in second grade will write stories about their lives. We also write in journals.
Grading: Second grade will give grades for English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts/Skills, and PE/Health.
Testing: All second grade students will be given a Dibels reading test required by the State of Utah.
Overview of the Utah Core State Standards:
Homework:
Daily: My Math is the math program we are using in second grade. Homework will come home every night.
Reading: It is the expectation of Morgan Elementary that each student practice reading at home 20 to 30 minutes each day under the supervision of parents. Be sure to read a minimum of 20 minutes at least five days a week through December 2014. Starting in January 2015, the minutes will change to 30 minutes per
night. Remember as you listen to your child read, let him/her predict what will happen next. Ask your child questions to make sure they comprehend what they are reading.
**Please record the date and title of the book read, sign the minutes read each night, and total the minutes each month on the reading calendar in your child’s homework folder.
High Frequency Word Lists: Each student in 2nd grade is required to read the first 400 high frequency words without hesitation; therefore, we need these words practiced at home until they are read fluently without pausing more than 3 seconds. Each 100 words are to be completed by the date listed on the bottom of the page. Please sign and return the appropriate paper by or before the date indicating that your student can read these words with ease. Take your time until they master these lists. The lists are in their homework folder.
Spelling: Please practice the spelling words with your child. In class, we sort words according to the skill being learned. It is helpful to use the words in a sentence to reinforce the meaning of the words. The spelling tests will be on Fridays.
Book Orders: You may visit my class page to order books at any time.
Procedures:
